Recycling

"There is no such place as away" - Bridgit Strawbridge

How about aiming for zero waste? What we cannot use should be recycled. The UK recycles 12% of its waste, yet there is technology available to recycle 40%.

A survey by the Environment Agency highlighted most SME's are unaware of their impacts on the environment, or the legislative requirements. There are a number of benefits in promoting 'Green Practices' such as compliance with legislation, ratings on Corporate Social Responsibility as well as savings.

Most councils have a pledge to provide facilities for 2 recyclables by 2010 - how is your council doing?

To help with the process: Wash out your cans & plastic bottles, squash your bottles and cans (reduces the number of Lorries required to transport them).

Plastics
There are about 50 different types of plastic. The main types include (click on the article below for more information):
    • HDPE - Opaque bottles
    • PVC - Transparent bottles, with a seam running across the base
    • PET - Transparent bottles, with a hard moulded spot in the centre of the base
  • If your home recycling bin doesn?t take plastic bottles, then deposit them at your local recycling bank.
  • Clean bottles before recycling them.
  • Buy plastic bottles in bulk whenever possible to reduce packaging waste.
  • Carriers can be reused next time you're at the shops, or deposit used ones at collection points provided by some supermarkets.
