10 Top Energy Saving Tips

What could you do with £167 a year... a shopping spree, an evening out in the city?

1. Boil only the amount of water you need in the kettle - using the correct amount saves around £5 per year.

2. Hang your washing out to dry outside. Avoid using the tumble dryer om tje summer and you could save around £35 a year.

3. Turn the room thermostat down by 1o and you could save 10% on your feul bill (based on a 3 bedroom semi-detached house) and this will save you around £29 a year.

4. Close the curtains at dusk and save around £15 a year.

5. Fit low energy light bulbs where possible; 4 low energy bulbs on for 5 hours a day saves around £23 a year.

6. Take a shower instead of a bath - a shower uses less than half the amount of hot water - and saver around £10 per year per person.

7. Turn off the taps properly and save around £5 a year. A dripping hot tap will fill a bath in one day.

8. Put the plug in and save around £15 a year.

9. Set the hot water cylinder to 60 - 65o and save around £15 a year.

10. Insulate your hot water cylinder, this will cost around £15 but will more than pay for itself in a year.

So, if you implement all these you could save £167.

"100% green electricity tariffs are not necessarily the best environmental option as they involve purchasing electricity from established renewable energy developments and don't contribute to the construction of new renewable energy capacity."
